About the role

Develop new processes, optimize existing processes and develop strategy to meet the needs for future business growth.  Process Science is a key pillar leading a team of scientists in the area of microbiology, fermentation, process engineering, data sciences, food safety expertise, hygienic design, and operations expertise.

The role requires subject matter expertise in the area of process engineering, fermentation biotechnology and systems design/thinking which enables operations to achieve improvement in yield, sanitary design, fermentation process improvement, and food safety design.

The role helps to develop the CAPEX strategy for the plant from capability and competency development (strategic level and not operational/tactical level) and key alignment with various stakeholders.

The role is responsible for safeguarding the process science team deliverables and KPI by securing clear responsibilities and ways of working to secure strategic delivery rather than getting involved with tactical work.

 

 

Key responsibilities

  • Oversight of the commercialization process for new products/processes and transfers.
  1. Identification of manufacturing site constraints to new process/product introduction.
  2. Considers commercial implications regarding economic manufacture.
  3. Identify and drive the resolution of the plant capacity issues through collaboration with the cross functional teams.
  4. Yield / Process improvement optimization of existing production processes to maximize the capacity for the Rochester site.  Determine the process improvement need and estimate the capital investment, as required.
  • Develop strategy for fulfilling future production needs, as required by the business.
  • Identification/implementation of new process technology applicable to the business (including the development of manufacturing capability).
  • Liaising with the existing Food Protection R&D and developing a good working relationship with Global and Regional process technologies and applications teams.
  • Translating successes from the other Technologies and Businesses and Regions into Food Protection Technologies.
  • As a key member of the Leadership team for the plant, provide support to the operations, challenge the other leaders to strive for improvement and deliver engaging environment for the employees.
  • Assist Quality Group leadership in the resolution of technical issues, assist with training on products/processes, audit of testing methodologies, support and guidance on quality decisions affecting product safety, quality and consistency.
  • Support Operations with guidance on impact to product in standard work practices/SOPs, new equipment purchase/installation, modifications to work center design, process changes, manufacturing delays and anomalies.
  • Toll Manufacturing relationship – assist in the evaluation of the strategic alliances from the R&D, product development aspect for Food Protection.
  • Support Acquisitions-be an active partner in Due Diligence process evaluating the acquisition potential.
  • Leverage and share the best practices between Fermentation Technology sites.
  • Responsible for pilot design, scale up trial design and success.
  • Management of the Food protection seed train and other unit operations to best in class standards
     

Qualifications and skills

  • Strong knowledge of fermentation and the downstream processes required for product production.  Key process knowledge of plant and equipment and Food Protection portfolio.
  • Strong managerial skills to handle cross functional teams and multi-tasking of projects.
  • Knowledge of the quality requirements and customer expectations for ingredients sold into food and nutrition markets.
  • Capability for assessment of plants and technology from the floor.
  • 5+ yrs of plant and relevant research experience
  •  Travel requirements on average -25-30%


Education

  • Science Degree (Life science) essential, M.S. required, PhD desirable
  • Process engineering experience/knowledge – required
