What you'll do


A. Reports to: QATM 

B. Directly Supervises: None  

C. Indirectly Supervises: Microbiology lab staff, Cultures functional testing staff, Inoculum development staff 

D. Absence Covered By: QC Manager 



Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety.  This requires observing and enforcing safety rules and practices, encouraging safe work behaviors, and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe behavior, which may lead to accidents. 

Continually endorse the Quality & Food Safety Policies, assure conformance to all requirements of the Quality & Food Safety Management Systems, & take action to properly report failures of these systems to site management



To maintain and coordinate activities in the Microbiology, Inoculation and Cultures functional testing laboratories.  Performs aseptic microbiological techniques and trains other staff in said techniques.  Performs and interprets QC microbiological test results and makes recommendations for improvement.  Maintains inventory control systems for intermediate and finished good products. 




A. Essential Functions: 

  1. Has full knowledge of relevant procedures for and provides oversight of all Inoculation lab activities including scheduling, propagation, development and isolation. 

  1. Maintains and propagates on-site culture collection and offsite back-up storage. 

  1. Has full knowledge of relevant procedures for and provides oversight of Cultures functional testing laboratory. 

  1. Has full knowledge of relevant procedures for and provides oversight of QC microbiology laboratory. 

  1. Creates and provides blend recipes for freeze-dried culture products to production. 

  1. Performs, interprets and evaluates QC test result and makes recommendations. 

  1. Directs microbiological identification of isolated contaminants from production process.  Develops plan for troubleshooting fermentation contamination investigations. 

  1. Serves as point of contact and coordinator for all third party labs. 

  1. Coordinates all calibrations and PMs of lab equipment. 

  1. Purchases lab equipment/materials and ensures proper inventories are held. 

  1. Maintains and provides training for use of databases housing site-specific procedures and work instructions. 

  1. Gives input and assists in the development of QC procedures, policies and philosophies. 

  1. Ensures that products and QC practices are in compliance with Kerry standards and local, state and federal regulations. 

  1. Provides input on relevant QC issues. 

  1. Promotes and works in a team environment, and is an active participant in all QC activities. 

  1. Enforces and supports GMP policies. 

  1. Maintains skills and knowledge base in QC methods.  Maintain knowledge of relevant microbiological methodologies. 

What you'll need

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biology or related fields.  

EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years’ experience in a Microbiology or QC lab setting is desired. 


  • Knowledge in QC laboratory methodologies and quality systems is required. 
  • Knowledge of current GMP and HACCP Training is required. 
  • Must be computer literate. 
  • Incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills, including both verbal and written communication and the ability to lead and work in interdepartmental teams. 
  • The work is self-directed and requires the ability to work without close, direct supervision utilizing good organizational techniques.
