Technical Manager

We’re currently looking for a Technical Manager to join our fantastic foods site, based in Hyde!

About the role

To develop and lead the site Quality and Technical strategy and objectives in line with statutory, Kerry Group, customer and best practice standards. Accountable for products and processes being safe and in compliance with specifications, statutory obligations, customer requirements and best in class.

To achieve success in this position it is critical that the Technical Manager makes Kerry Foods Purpose Vision & Values real within the Technical Function, practicing & cascading the principles and philosophies of KPS.

The role holder will sit on the site leadership team (SLT) and will be required to continually update the other team members and the business on key metrics and other relevant information.

To be the interaction between customer and supplier teams to build and maintain excellent working relationships with both.

Key responsibilities
  • Accountable for ensuring the implementation and maintenance of technical standards across the site which are both necessary and appropriate and aligned with Customer / Group requirements and site strategy. 
  • Ensure that site maintains Green KFMS grade as a minimum and achieves BRC AA+ within defined period of time.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with key customer contacts, thus enabling effective communication and providing a sound basis on which to build trust and develop customer confidence.
  • Develop and maintain internal Kerry and external (EHO, Primary Authority, BRC etc. relationships, this is a forward facing role and good relationships with various stakeholders is a prerequisite.
  • Liaise with Competent Authorities on site quality / technical issues relating to the manufacturing process such as consumer complaint investigation or factory audit
  • Lead and manage the supplier assurance function, to ensure that suppliers are providing a gold standard service to Kerry Foods, and to ensure all specifications are current and accurate.
  • Manager escalated Supplier Management issues (completing of audits/visits in follow up to an issue) and activities such as first productions of Kerry Branded products at co-manufacturers etc.
  • Lead and manage the technical and Quality Function to ensure they are engaged and high performing with a focus on problem solving and team work.
  • Manage the safety of the team and ensure near misses and accidents are investigated and reported within required timescales, in accordance with KSS, promoting Gold Standard H&S.
  • Facilitate the development of Technical excellence across the Business Unit by supporting and challenging both the Business Unit Senior Team and site in the development of Technical Resource Management strategies.
  • Ensure that in all processes the team use a Continuous Improvement ethos, KPS methodologies and horizon scan for new technologies entering the market that could achieve this.
  • Coach and develop staff accordingly and ensuring the necessary resources are in place as required by the needs of the business. Identify gaps in skills and expertise and develop accordingly. Mentor other members of site team as appropriate, including graduates.
  • Maintain product quality and adherence to standards by ensuring effective governance mechanisms are in place.
  • Work with product developers to ensure all new products and existing products are and remain legal, ensure all packaging is accurate, legal and approved.
  • Give sound technical input to the business and play an active role in strategic  decision making to ensure the safe production of food to protect consumers.
  • Report site metrics and through the team develop strategies for tackling issues, or potential issues identified through trend analysis.
  • Ensure any new, or existing packaging being changed is managed and approved, using Campden, primary authority or other external approval bodies approved by the business.
Qualifications and skills
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Food Science, Technology or related discipline.
  • Experience working within a similar Technical/Quality management role.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • HACCP Qualified.
  • Strong leadership skills, including people and projects.
  • Driven manager with the ability to coach and develop your team.
