About the role

 

The Plant Hygienist is responsible for the overall sanitation of the manufacturing plant including warehouse and utilities, establishing Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The incumbent must have an in-depth technical knowledge of hygiene & sanitation matters, a good knowledge of manufacturing process, utilities control, laboratory methods and food.
 

Work location: Hammardale - Durban 
Reporting to : Quality Manager 

Key responsibilities

 

  • Following prescribed guidelines, the role is accountable for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the production plant including warehouse and utilities
  • Provide support and guidance to enable the Production teams and all other departments to reach GMP standards and to deliver products of the correct quality
  • Develop and implement training to support GMP and IPM program; monitor the understanding of the Operators / Production staff / new hires
  • Conduct inspection and perform gap analysis of GMP and IPM program
  • Anticipate, trouble-shoot and resolve hygiene deviations with the respective Production Managers and Production teams, Service Departments and Quality Manager
  • Communicate to management on any gaps and corrective actions
  • Establish, implement and review the Pathogen Monitoring, which also covers Environmental Monitoring Programme and Integrated Pest Management, to ensure compliance to the Kerry policies / guidelines and customer requirements 
  • Act as the first contact point any related concern regarding to hygiene, IPM, EMP, GMP, validation and etc.
  • Support and ensure Kerry Laboratory compliance of MS ISO/IEC 17025 requirements and continually improve the effectiveness of laboratory management 
  • Develop complete master sanitation program of the plant and highlight any areas of concern (including the introduction of any new chemicals / equipment or any change validation activity
  • Propose and implement Continuous Improvement Projects focused on hygiene, quality and food safety
  • Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Quality Manager from time to time
     

Qualifications and skills

 

  • Completed Bachelors’ Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Food science or similar
  • Minimum 3-4  years’ experience in sanitation / hygiene / micro lab roles in Manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of food hygiene standard, HACCP and AIB required.
  • Occupational Health and Safety experience would be advantageous
  • Must have a solid understanding of ISO 17025
  • Experience in managing internal and external audits
  • Must have a good understanding of sampling methods, and all lab reference methods and rapid methods used for hygiene and utilities testing
  • Comfortable working in a fast changing and growing global environment where accountability, quality and timeliness are key
  • Disciplined, organized and systematic
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team  
  • Able to lead internal and regional projects
