Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring that all Kerry policies and standards are implemented and adhered to while ensuring regional, national and local legislative requirements are met in the planning & scheduling of works.
  • Ensures the QSHE requirements are always given the highest priority and included in the plan for all works as standard.
  • The planner is the principal contact and liaison person between the maintenance department and the other plant departments served by maintenance and ensures that the works requested are managed promptly & efficiently with a high level of quality & customer satisfaction, while ensuring the maintenance function is given the opportunity to provide this service.  
  • The planner receives all notifications from the requesting departments of the areas to which they are assigned, except for urgent works which is directly assigned to the Maintenance Manager or Engineering Technicians for immediate attention.
  • Discusses the details with the originating department as appropriate to ensure work requested is clearly defined and necessary.
  • Review all works regularly with the Engineering manager and other key stakeholders to seek approval or support to complete as necessary.
  • Visits works site to scope out works to be done, determines the stages and approach for same to ensure the most efficient and effective approach is taken. Where necessary consults with requester, engineers or maintenance supervisor when necessary.
  • Obtains blueprints, drawings, instructional manuals and special procedures, as needed, from files or other sources.  Makes any additional sketches, diagrams, etc., necessary to clarify the intent of the work order.
  • Identifies and obtains (requisitions, orders, kits as appropriate and in keeping with procedures) determinable materials, entering material needs on the work order.  Determines if critical items are in stock by verifying availability with stores.
  • Estimates jobs showing sequence of steps, the number of mechanics and required man-hours for each step.  Lists determinable materials and any special tools or equipment needed.  

  • Estimates cost of each work order in terms of direct labour, materials required and total cost.
  • Maintains and manages the Total backlog of work orders and informs the engineering manager if the backlog is exceeding acceptable limits.
  • Stays informed of the work crew availability and reviews the estimate of the coming weeks schedule status and forecast of manpower availability against same.
  • Develops, agrees and passes a weekly maintenance work schedule to the maintenance supervisor. Reviews this work schedule on a daily basis for co-ordination of further planned/follow-on work with the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Attends meetings with the production planning department and participates in the overall plant scheduling of the following week’s work. Negotiates for downtime “windows” during which preventative and corrective maintenance requiring downtime can be performed. 
  • Develops a file of standard work order (plans) for regularly recurring repair jobs, based on historical experience, to simplify the planning process.
  • Co-ordinates all planned maintenance activities and service visits that involve 3rd Parties
  • Ensure upkeep and adherence to Preventative Maintenance Plans and Task lists on the CMMS– Compliance, Health & Safety, Food Safety & Quality and Reliability focused PM’s.
  • Generates and circulates the weekly and monthly KPI trend reports with analyses commentary and recommendations.  
  • Reviews and updates PM tasks for effectiveness taking into account feedback from technicians

Qualifications and skills

  • Engineering degree or technical school training preferred.
  • Should have good oral / written communication skills, possess tact, and the ability to negotiate maintenance needs in balance with other departmental requirements.  
  •  Good understanding or mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Have adequate craft knowledge to estimate man hours and materials
  • Good administrative and mathematical skills with willingness to handle paperwork.
  • Have good planning skills.
  • Very good organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to keep multiple jobs in controlled motion – simultaneously.
  • Have a good working knowledge of personal computers and relational databases.
  • Able to read blueprints and shop drawings.
  • Sketching ability.
  • Competent user of MS Office – Outlook, Excel, Word
  • Competent user of a Computerised Maintenance Management System(s) (CMMS) – Preferably SAP PM
