About the role

The role of the Maintenance Fitter is to support operations team in delivering to its customers with the highest quality product, on time in full while ensuring the equipment is safe in its operation for both personal and the product it produces. The Maintenance Fitter is the custodian of the equipment and systems within the plant, to this end the person performing this role will be required to perform emergency response support to operations for all equipment issues, minimising downtime and waste. Carry out planned maintenance tasks to prevent failures of equipment during operation and bring forward improved maintenance suggestions and/or improvement initiatives to increase reliability of equipment and where possible to increase availability, improve quality and/or efficiency while at all-times ensuring safety systems is maintained or improved.

This position will form part of a team of 4 mechanical fitters operating on an 8hr day shift supporting a permanent night shift that rotates with one of the day/afternoon fitters for 1 week every 10 weeks. All positions have call outs for some periods. From time to time it will be necessary to do overtime and/or weekend work.

Key responsibilities

  • Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety. Ensures all works undertaken during maintenance activities performed does not breach the appropriate health and safety standards and where necessary will assist others and/or report safety breaches.
  • Responsible for ensuring an up-to-date knowledge of Kerry policies, regional, national and local legislative requirements necessary in performing the tasks associated with the role of maintenance engineer.
  • Participates in process and equipment risk assessments and HACCP studies as necessary
  • Leads or assists in the troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance of electro-mechanical food manufacturing equipment or processes containing pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, PLC and/or scada-control systems
  • Leads or assists in the troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance of facilities plant and services, including but not limited to compressed air, refrigeration and steam.
  • To be observant & work off your own initiative when a fault is detected & to take decisive action to effect immediate repair or seek further assistance or support.
  • Participates in cross functional teams to implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce costs.
  • Provides recommendations for improvement to the maintenance plans and/or equipment to eliminate downtime and waste, improving overall plant efficiency.
  • Work with equipment suppliers or contractors on new equipment and installations and modifications as requested.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to other trades and/or apprentices
  • Update the maintenance management system (MEX/SAP PM), record all works performed, stores transactions made and all changes/modifications made to equipment/systems.
  • Carry out the work schedule issued each week, completing the work as prioritised to confirmation within the CMMS system.
  • Where necessary supports the planner/scheduler in specifying job plans for efficient execution.
  • Maintains and reports updates and changes to process control and /or documentation including drawings, programs, and databases. All changes to be logs such changes in the CMMS.

Qualifications and skills

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Qualification in Process Engineering & Design (cross-skilled capabilities are also a plus).
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing or process environment with a knack for troubleshooting.
  • Electro-Mechanical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of automated equipment, including pneumatic, hydraulic, and instrumentation systems.
  • Proficient with computers and familiarity with CMMS systems (e.g., CMMS/MEX/SAP).
  • Food Industry Experience (Bonus): Prior experience with milk processing, drying, milling, baking, powder handling, extrusion, and packing.
  • Knowledge of boilers, refrigeration, air handling, and effluent treatment plants.
  • Ability to safely troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems, with understanding of planned maintenance and reading drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines.
  • Experience with welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Arc), stainless steel fabrication, machining, and gas qualification.
