What you'll do


The RD&A Senior Technologist reports to the RD&A Manager of Product Advancement to accelerate timelines for prototype development from bench to scale up based on customer needs and consumer marketplace trends, in partnership with Business Development, Operations, Regulatory and Finance teams.  The candidate is responsible for downstream development and formulation of multi-functional preservation ingredients for food products.  This will be achieved through benchtop, pilot scale and factory trials involving fermented and spray dried ingredients, product characterization, systems integration, and literature searches.  You will actively lead and participate in proactive and reactive product technology projects, coordinate product introductions & commercializations, and actively collaborate with other pillars within the global Food Protection & Preservation team. 

Core Tasks:

Execute Participate in internal and external customer requests to satisfy project needs from concept through commercialization and troubleshooting.  This would involve activities such as:
Participation in ideation/brainstorming.
Preparing project and experimental plans
Matching competitive products
Formulation optimization
Execute internal processes through Kerry systems
Ability to understand and troubleshoot processes
Participate in fact-based conceptual design of prototypes and process design to match customer needs. Work with the tools of product characterization, predictive product specifications, basic process modeling, process flow diagrams (PFD and P&ID), and process mapping for various unit operations for scale up and facility optimizations. 
Provide hands-on optimization and troubleshooting support for manufacturing processes which may include fermentation, spray drying, freeze drying, centrifugation, filtration, pelletizing, evaporation, pasteurization, and sterilization.  Experience or exposure to these processes are critical to success in this role. Process development will be performed in cooperation with the process design group and internal experts.
Incorporate knowledge and key learnings into technology transfer report to create a smooth hand over to Operations and other stakeholders.
Additional Tasks:

Identify, with manager, priorities, goals and objectives for projects.
Set clear targets for him/herself and identify path on how to get there.
Take full ownership of projects, know when he/she is accountable for making a decision and when to escalate to a higher level.
Perform as the technical team lead during pilot plant runs, production scale-ups and commercialization at Kerry facilities or at external partner sites.
Actively contribute to the standardization of a toolbox for troubleshooting, process improvement and risk reduction on both pilot and manufacturing scales.
Support and coordinate intellectual property for relevant expertise in communication with Regulatory, Marketing, and Sales.
Expand network of collaborators to include global Kerry network for completion of projects and initiatives.
Build relationships and networks within greater Kerry as necessary to complete projects.
Deliver succinct, relevant and professional project updates and presentations internally & externally.
Seek feedback on performance from manager and actively incorporate into key skills and behavior development.

Where you'll need to be successful

Qualifications
•    Education and Experience
o    MS or PhD in food science, chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, or another related field.
o    3-5 years of experience in a similar role is required.
•    Competencies
o    Strong systems formulation experience to accelerate timelines for development from concept to scale up.
o    Strong background in food chemistry, food processing, sensory, food packaging systems and food engineering.
o    Experience with food processing while understanding hygienic and sanitary standards.
o    Experience working with industrial processing (i.e., fermentation, spray drying, freeze drying, centrifugation, filtration, pelletizing, evaporation, pasteurization and sterilization).
o    Strives for high standards, seeks solutions, drives continuous improvement of products and processes and demonstrates some intellectual curiosity.
o    Good communication skills and intercultural sensitivity.
o    Has a hands-on, get the job done mentality.
o    Takes initiative in results interpretation and presentation.  Strong ability to incorporate cost in use calculations/models and production processes.
o    Willingness to travel (15-30%).
