Where you'll work:

 

The Research and Development Director for Kerry’s Pharma division working in partnership with the executive team will develop and implement global strategic plans to execute key R&D initiatives. The successful candidate will develop and implement global strategic initiatives to advance our growth ambitions in the pharma and biotech market across key regions. The role entails managing a technical team with a focus on cell nutrition (cell culture and microbiology) in addition to having functional leadership responsibilities for other technologies within the pharma division encompassing coatings, excipients and acetates.  As such, knowledge of both upstream and downstream processes of drug substance and drug product manufacturing are ideal in that the candidate will be driving technical groups across the pharmaceutical value chain.    

 

The role entails a significant focus on cell culture techniques, media optimization with a thorough knowledge of protein quality attributes for biologics, vaccines and other fermentation-based products. The candidate will oversee research initiatives in the area of mammalian cell metabolism and general cellular physiology. The candidate will lead research in the development of hydrolysates while validating their performance across a range of fermentation applications.  The role entails partnering with manufacturing to ensure efficiencies in the production of new and existing ingredients. The candidate will provide key technical input into future growth opportunities within the biotechnology space, including other high-value ingredients utilized in fermentation-based pharma processes.  

What you'll do:

 

The successful candidate will execute the technical strategy by developing a robust innovation pipeline in addition to partnering with expert internal & external stakeholders to deliver key growth initiatives. The candidate will leverage the full breadth of Kerry’s ingredient platforms to create market differentiating solutions that are synergistic with Kerry’s Pharma science-backed ingredient portfolio. 

The incumbent will work in partnership with business development, sales, marketing, operations, quality, and finance to ensure internal and external customer expectations are met while maintaining compliance with relevant regulatory requirements. This strategic role will have high visibility and frequent interactions with senior leadership within Kerry. The position has a global remit with a flexible location within one of Kerry’s global research centers such as Beloit WI. 
 

 Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Lead a team of technical personnel to advance Kerry’s Pharma research strategy. 
•    Develop a strategic technical roadmap that aligns with the business strategy and provides a competitive advantage for our high-value products 
•    Drive an evolution and differentiation of our portfolio through an internal and external technology innovation program.
•    Identify and create new venture opportunities, establish business relationships with subject matter experts and negotiate research contracts. 
•    Meet and exceed technical targets and key performance indicators. 
•    Develop and manage detailed budgets in accordance with business targets.
•    Build strong customer relationships delivering customer-centric solutions.
•    Build relations with the broader Kerry R&D teams developing integrated solutions that incorporate functional ingredients into value added systems. 
•    Maintain awareness of the current and evolving technical landscape and regulations communicating potential impacts & opportunities to leadership. 
•    Select, develop, motivate and empower staff to effectively fulfil their duties.
•    Integrate R&D functions from new merger and acquisitions (M&A). Support and lead synergy realization while also overseeing M&A due diligence activities.
•    Manage a team of technical service employees who filter customer queries and interface with key stakeholders from a cross functional team. 
•    Lead the process science manufacturing-based employees to ensure alignment with R&D initiatives. Oversee technical investigations, provide guidance, and lead activities for product and process improvements.
•    Work closely with process technology to successfully transfer technology from pilot to commercial production while managing the implementation of differentiated technical solutions. 
•    Interpret data to provide technical direction to projects. 

What you'll need to be successful:

 

Qualifications and skills 
•    M.S. or Ph.D in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioprocess Engineering, Biology or other related fields. 7-10 years’ experience in Biopharmaceutical/Cell culture development media area
•    Experience managing an R&D team for >10 years
•    Knowledgeable in CHO cell culture techniques, media optimization, experienced in media formulation, strong Bioreactor knowledge and familiarization with plant GMP.
•    Strong knowledge of mammalian cell metabolism and metabolites, cellular physiology, media optimization.
•    Thorough knowledge of protein quality attributes for biologics and how media / feed / supplements can influence them
•    Molecular biology, protein biochemistry, genetic engineering techniques and knowledge of the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industry.
•    Knowledge of drug product formulation processes, including working knowledge of excipients and coatings is a plus
•    Strong entrepreneurial strategic mindset with a keen awareness of the technology landscape to develop robust breakthrough technical strategies
