About the role

Sensory Scientist at Kerry

The Sensory Scientist will be an integral part of Sensory & Product Research Team, reporting to the NA Director of Sensory and Consumer Product Research. The focus will be on leading and managing the sensory descriptive studies and internal training to expand the use of Kerry sensory lexicon within RD&A, Marketing, and customers.

Key responsibilities

Your Role at Kerry

- Lead the Descriptive Panel initiative for the NA Sensory team and developing best in class capabilities. You will be considered a Descriptive Analysis subject matter expert so modifying Ways of Working, adding new methods, refreshing the Descriptive Analysis panel (DA), etc. all fit under this area

- Apply scientific knowledge to independently design, plan, and execute descriptive projects, using established and innovative testing methods and processes

Provide technical leadership through translating learning of descriptive research into actionable insights and serve as subject matter expert on projects 

- Explore and implement new descriptive methods, continuously improve operational efficiency, and add value to product understanding

- Accurately and consistently record experimental methods, materials, and results in sensory and consumer research database

- Analyze data following statistical principles, evaluating results, forming conclusions, making recommendations and next steps.

- Provide sensory training, to RD&A and cross-functional associates to strengthen internal capabilities

Define descriptive research objectives and strategy to support Kerry’s short- and long-term strategic growth initiatives

- Lead market reviews for key product categories and internal collection projects, focusing on similarities and differences, to spot competitive advantages and opportunities

- Stay connected and up to date on new descriptive research techniques

- Setup and improve program, research methodology and testing capabilities   

- Collaborate cross-functionally and manage multiple projects simultaneously 

- Advocate for using tasteTalk (Kerry lexicon) with the DA panel, RD&A, Marketing, Customers, etc.  

Qualifications and skills

Qualifications & Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Food Science or equivalent with a concentration in sensory science, behavioral psychology, data analytics or applied statistics. Master's or PhD is a plus.

-  5+ years of experience, preferably in the Food and Beverage industry working for a CPG company, Flavor Company or other related job experiences including internships, etc.

- Experience in leading, training and recruiting descriptive panelists using traditional methods and rapid techniques. Good at articulating and discriminating a wide variety of flavor and aroma stimuli.

- Experience with discrimination and both qualitative and quantitative consumer methods, a plus.

- Experience using Sensory and Statistical data collection and analysis software (e.g., EyeQuestion, XLSTAT, IFP, any Design of Experiment (DOE) software, etc.), PowerPoint, Excel, Project, Word

- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to moderate group discussions.

- Solid communication skills including ability to write concise, informative reports and verbally present complex technical information to non-technical audiences.

- Ability to listen, identify and clearly define objectives and develop a research plan to do the correct descriptive at the right time, thereby increasing the success rate.

- Strong planning and organizational skills. Ability to apply tools and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute multiple projects/work plans and ensure successful completion (e.g., on time, on budget).

-Self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively focus and motivate resources.

- Ability to balance multiple priorities and multi-task.

- Able to build good relationships with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and from multiple functions

- Be comfortable with ambiguity and fast-moving timelines.

- Good team player

- Strong problem solving, organization and attention to detail skills.

- Experience working on and/or leading Global projects, testing a wide range of savory and sweet product categories is a plus.
